The debate on the transformation of the international order, the characteristics of the current moment of transition, and the scenarios for its possible future contours include both a theoretical-conceptual and an empirical dimension.

Among the lines of work in the theoretical field are, among others, those who continue to propose analysis in terms of new polarities (the United States versus China, another Cold War); those who oppose this position and outline a structural transformation that goes beyond a distribution of power among powers and encompasses the end of a historical cycle that put an end to two components of the post-Cold War era — neoliberal hyper-globalization and liberal democracy — (Sanahuja, 2020; Merino, 2025; Levitsky and Way, February 11, 2025); those who point to the arrival of a later stage of capitalism called “techno-feudalism” (Varoufakis, 2024; Bremmer, 2021, 2025), who focus on the transitional situation of the order, characterizing it in Antonio Gramsci's terms as an “interregnum” and its consequent “morbid symptoms” (Babic, 2020; Sanahuja, 2022; Pezzini, May 26, 2022); who argue that we are witnessing and will continue to witness a non-hegemonic order for an extended period of time (Russell and Tokatlián, 2025).

From an empirical perspective, approaches that analyze current events from the perspective of geoeconomics and geopolitics stand out; those that focus on political transformations that show growth in the extreme right, its libertarian versions under the “Trump effect,” and autocracies; those that address central issues on the current agenda such as climate change, artificial intelligence, the role of techno-utopian entrepreneurs, etc.

In light of the above, the Euro-Latin American Journal of Social and Political Analysis (RELASP) presents its dossier: “Possible scenarios in the face of the reconfiguration of the world order.”

Topics to be developed:

  • Theoretical characterization of the transformation of the international order.
  • Major issues on the international agenda in the 21st century.
  • Classification of tensions between China and the United States.
  • The role of techno-utopian entrepreneurs.
  • Impacts of the transformations of the order on Latin America and Europe.
  • Latin America and the Caribbean in the face of transformations in the world order (analysis of the impact on the region of the links between the United States and the People's Republic of China and between the United States and the European Union; the alliance between the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation; the reaffirmation of the Monroe Doctrine by the Donald Trump administration, and other possible scenarios).
  • The rise of the extreme right and its libertarian versions and proposals for the international order.
  • Transitional nature of the international security paradigm.
