Assessment, challenges and views on democracy

This call seeks to problematize the current situation experienced by the democratization process over the last forty years with the intention of putting into dialogue the challenges of democracy in a comparative perspective over the last fifty years. It is specifically proposed to think about the third wave of democratization, seeking to make an assessments of its progress and setbacks. A discussion on disaffection, dissatisfaction and distrust towards democracy in Latin American, European or African terms will be initiated. We will then consider reflections that put into historical perspective the vicissitudes of democracy(ies), from its recovery in Southern Europe in the late 1970s, the political transition in South American countries in the 1980s, the processes of transformation in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s, including the processes of peace and political change in Africa, Central and South America in the 1990s and 2000s, as well as the processes of de-democratization in these regions in the twenty-first century. Reviews are invited from the social and political sciences as well as the humanities that study new democracies.
